Capital Mall is hosting free indoor trick-or-treating on Saturday, Oct. 31, giving Olympia families a dry, warm option for Halloween night.

The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Participating stores will hand out candy to children 12 and under while supplies last, according to the mall's event page. The whole family is welcome to come in costume. Dogs, too.

After collecting candy, families can head to Macy's Court for a photo booth, live DJ, glitter tattoos and balloon animals. Chick-fil-A is sponsoring the event.

The photo booth prints two strips. Attendees keep one and drop the other into a costume contest entry box.

The mall will pick five finalists and post them on its social media pages for a public vote. The winner gets a Capital Mall gift card.

No registration or RSVP is required.

The mall promoted the event in a sponsored post on ThurstonTalk as a chance for kids to pick any costume without worrying about weather. The indoor setting takes Pacific Northwest rain out of the equation.

Northwest Grind, a coffee shop inside the mall, offers hot chocolate and coffee for parents looking to warm up while kids make the rounds.

Families looking to stretch the holiday have another option earlier in the day. The Olympia Downtown Alliance's LoveOly campaign includes a two-week scavenger hunt running Oct. 17 through Oct. 31. Family-friendly treating downtown runs 3 to 6 p.m. on Halloween, with a pet costume contest at 5th Avenue and Washington Street from 4 to 5 p.m., according to ThurstonTalk.

The downtown and Capital Mall events overlap for one hour. Downtown treating ends at 6 p.m. and the mall's event starts at 5 p.m., so families could start downtown and finish at the mall.

The mall has not published a list of which stores are handing out candy.
