Olympia rolled past Yelm 64-16 on Saturday, Sept. 26, opening 4A South Puget Sound League (SPSL) play with the Bears' most lopsided win of the season.
Capital followed with a 29-17 victory over River Ridge in the Cougars' 3A Puget Sound League (PSL) opener at Ingersoll Stadium. That game had been delayed from Friday, Sept. 25.
The two Saturday results completed a Week 4 sweep for the area's four high school programs. Tumwater beat Woodland 47-7 and Black Hills topped Hudson's Bay 39-14 on Friday, Sept. 25, according to The Olympian's statewide scoreboard.
All four teams won.
Olympia stays unbeaten
The Bears improved to 4-0 under first-year head coach Cary Nagel, who took over a program that went 5-5 last season. Olympia has outscored opponents 168-60 through four games, per MaxPreps.
The 64 points at Yelm marked the Bears' highest single-game total of the fall. Their previous three wins came over Capital (41-25), Stadium (41-16) and Bellarmine Prep (22-3).
Junior defensive back Braden Barrett entered the week tied for fifth in Washington in interceptions with two, according to MaxPreps statewide statistical leaders. Updated totals after the Yelm game were not yet available.
Capital rides two-game streak
The Cougars evened their record at 2-2 and opened PSL play 1-0. Capital started the season with losses to Olympia and Kelso before beating Bonney Lake 27-18 on Sept. 18 and then handling River Ridge, per MaxPreps.
Senior wide receiver Carter Pennington ranked second in the state in receiving yards (475) and was tied for 16th in total touchdowns (6) through three games. Junior linebacker Nolen Rea sat eighth statewide in total tackles (30), and senior defensive back Mason Bottin was tied for 14th in interceptions (2). Those numbers, compiled by MaxPreps entering Week 4, do not yet reflect Saturday's game.
Tumwater holds top ranking
Tumwater entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in Class 2A by The News Tribune and No. 7 overall in the state by MaxPreps. The Thunderbirds' 47-7 rout of Woodland on Friday pushed their record to 4-0.

Olympia hosts Graham-Kapowsin in SPSL play on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. Capital travels to Peninsula for a PSL matchup the same night at 7 p.m.
