Firefighters from Olympia and Tumwater battled a fast-moving blaze that started at an encampment near Capitol Lake on Monday night, laying more than 1,000 feet of hose across steep terrain before extinguishing the fire around 11:25 p.m.

The fire broke out at approximately 9 p.m. Aug. 24 between the ramp from U.S. 101 onto northbound Interstate 5 and the Capitol Boulevard overpass, at milepost 104. Flames spread from the encampment into trees above Capitol Lake, according to MyNorthwest.

Several Olympia Fire Department units, the Tumwater Fire Department and Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the scene. The steep slope and lack of foot access made conditions potentially dangerous for firefighters to approach on the ground, forcing crews to extend more than 1,000 feet of hose line and deploy an aerial master stream to reach the fire from a distance rather than send personnel in on foot.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews cleared the roadway around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, though a large amount of water left conditions slippery for drivers on northbound I-5 near the scene.

Washington State Patrol District 1 public information officer Trooper Kameron Watts confirmed the response on X, noting that several trees caught fire but crews stopped the blaze from spreading further.

The Olympia Fire Department credited WSP in a Facebook post for blocking and mitigating traffic to keep firefighters safe during the extended operation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The city has not issued a public statement about the blaze.

Northbound I-5 drivers near milepost 104 may encounter residual water on the roadway from the firefighting effort early Tuesday.
