Olympia residents can drop off old house paint for free recycling on Saturday, July 11, at Griffin School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thurston County announced the drive-thru collection event on Wednesday, July 2, in partnership with neighborhood group Griffin Neighbors and recycling company GreenSheen Paint.

What you can bring

The county's announcement lists accepted materials: latex and oil-based house paint, stains, and primers, with a five-gallon maximum per container. Spray cans, automotive or marine paint, thinners, and glues will not be accepted.

How it works

The event uses a drive-thru format. Participants stay in their vehicles, pop the trunk, and volunteers handle the unloading. No heavy lifting required.

GreenSheen Paint, which organizes community paint recycling collections across the country through its Circular.eco platform, is running the logistics. The company posted on Facebook that it "teamed up with Thurston County and Griffin Neighbors to host a community paint recycling collection event."

Why it matters

Leftover paint can't go in regular trash pickup in Thurston County, making collection events like this a free alternative to a trip to a permanent hazardous waste facility.
