Four legends. One studio. More than 20 hits. Harlequin Productions is staging "Million Dollar Quartet" at the State Theater in downtown Olympia, and the run closes Sunday, July 26.
The musical recreates the true story of December 4, 1956, when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins landed in the same room at Sun Records in Memphis for an impromptu jam session arranged by producer Sam Phillips. What followed was an evening of raw, unscripted rock 'n' roll that became the stuff of music legend.
Director Emily Rollie said the show lets audiences step inside that moment.
"This is an actual historical moment that we get to see inside of through the memory of Sam Phillips, who brought them all together in the first place," Rollie told Oly Arts.
A local cast of four takes on the iconic roles: Ben Bailey plays Elvis Presley, Nathan Roberts is Johnny Cash, Wyatt Brownell tackles Jerry Lee Lewis, and Maverick McCarl steps into Carl Perkins' blue suede shoes. All four sing, act, and play their own instruments live on stage.
The setlist runs deep. Audiences will hear "Blue Suede Shoes," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Great Balls of Fire," "Hound Dog," "I Walk the Line," and more than a dozen other classics from the era that launched rock 'n' roll.
The show runs through Sunday, July 26, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. The State Theater is at 202 4th Avenue E in Olympia.
Tickets range from $39 to $99 and are available online at harlequinproductions.org or by calling the box office at (360) 786-0151.
For a bigger experience, Harlequin offers Backstage Pass VIP tickets that include early backstage admission, a tour of the set with photo opportunities, a seat for the pre-show on-stage sound check, and a collectible tote bag with a cast-signed poster.
The musical, written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott, premiered on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre on April 11, 2010, and ran for 489 performances. It earned three Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Book, and Levi Kreis won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis.
Harlequin's production opened June 19 at the State Theater.
