A bookstore packed with horror fiction opened in September at 100 4th Ave. E in downtown Olympia.

The Infernal Annex, owned by Chelsia and Christopher Boyer, held a soft opening on Sept. 5 and a grand opening during Fall Arts Walk the first week of October, according to ThurstonTalk.

The store sits at the corner of Capitol Way and 4th Avenue, occupying more than 1,800 square feet.

Books make up about 80% of the inventory, with an emphasis on independent publishers over big-name authors, Christopher Boyer told The Olympian in September ahead of the opening.

The shelves carry horror fiction, gothic literature, manga, graphic novels, splatterpunk, dark romance, occult titles and witchcraft books.

The store also sells gift items such as candles, stickers, magnets and horror-themed board games.

"I wanted to give an opportunity for people to be able to buy stuff from like a lot of independent publishers, which are usually almost never stocked in larger bookstores," Boyer told The Olympian in September.

The majority of titles are new, with a smaller section of used books and an area for collectibles including rare, signed or discontinued editions, The Olympian reported.

Both owners hold other jobs. Christopher Boyer manages at an IT company, and Chelsia Boyer does revenue cycle management for a local dental company, according to ThurstonTalk.

The idea for the store grew out of their own frustration finding horror titles.

Christopher Boyer told ThurstonTalk the couple wanted to give people a place to browse a wide range of horror and to create a gathering space for fans of the genre. The 1,800-square-foot space includes a seating area and a large table for book clubs, writers' groups and movie nights.

The store has already started hosting events. A Build-A-Boo ghost-painting workshop with Artväna took place Sunday, Oct. 18, according to The JOLT. Upcoming programming includes author signings, readings, game nights and craft nights.

The Infernal Annex is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the store's website.
