A free art exhibit examining what organizers call a crisis in American democracy wraps up at the end of the month in downtown Olympia, with a spoken word evening planned two days from now.
"Resistance: The HeART of the Matter" features work by 21 artists from Western Washington and Oregon at Olympia Art Gallery, 121 State Ave. NE. Olympia Indivisible, a local grassroots organization, opened the show Oct. 14 in cooperation with the gallery, The JOLT reported.
Curator Melinda Holman said in a news release that organizers invited artists of all disciplines and media to explore challenges facing the country's democratic systems.
The hope, Holman said, was to educate, motivate and activate a change in direction, not through violence but by waking people up and changing hearts.
The exhibit's spoken word evening is Saturday, Oct. 24, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Local poets will share work focused on nonviolent resistance. Beverages and snacks will be available for attendees. The sources reviewed do not specify whether the spoken word event carries a separate charge.
The exhibit itself is free and open to the public through Oct. 31.
Visitors can drop by Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The gallery sits on State Avenue in downtown Olympia, a short walk from the Capitol campus.
Twenty-one artists contributed pieces to the show, which spans multiple disciplines and media. Olympia Indivisible organized the exhibit as a way to channel political concern into creative expression, according to the group's news release.
The spoken word evening is the exhibit's final scheduled event before the Oct. 31 closing.
