A team from Kansas City beat 41 other crews at the third annual Olympia Dragon Boat Festival, winning the final race by 0.02 seconds on July 11 at Port Plaza.
SLAP Dragons KC edged out Catch-22 Hurricane of Vancouver, Washington, over the 250-meter course. SAKE Paddle Club, Seattle Flying Dragons and Gig Harbor Storm rounded out the top five, according to results reported by the JOLT News Organization.
The Kansas City squad is the only coed dragon boat team in Kansas and Missouri, according to VoyageKC magazine. The team name stands for "Sounds Like a Plan." A registered nonprofit, SLAP Dragons KC traveled to Olympia specifically seeking tougher competition, race organizer Niki Bilideau told JOLT News.
"As you can imagine, there are not a lot of dragon boats in the Midwest, but we're here, but we sure love Olympia and are looking forward to the competition," SLAP Dragons KC president Kari Rydalch said before the races Saturday.
After the win, Rydalch praised the Olympia Dragon Boat Club's hospitality, saying the club provided tents, chairs and a welcome basket for the visiting paddlers.
The festival, hosted by the Olympia Dragon Boat Club, drew 42 teams competing across three divisions: community, women's and mixed. Each boat carries 20 paddlers working in unison to a drummer's tempo over the 250-meter course.
Friday evening's opening ceremony on July 10 featured Mayor Payne performing the traditional "Awakening the Dragon" ritual, lion dancers from the Olympia Kung-Fu & Tai-Chi Club, and live music from Mukana Marimba, according to the festival's official website. The Hands On Children's Museum ran kids' activities, and food trucks lined the plaza.
Saturday's races ran from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission was free.
Two-hundredths of a second. That's what separated first place from second in the closest finish the festival has seen.
