Two volunteer training programs in gardening and waste reduction are accepting applications through WSU Thurston County Extension, with the first deadline hitting Monday, Aug. 17.

The Olympia-based extension office announced Wednesday, July 29 that it is taking applications for its 2026-27 Master Gardener Volunteer Training and Master Recycler Composter Volunteer Training. Both programs require applicants to be at least 18 years old.

Master Gardener training

The Master Gardener course runs from Friday, Sept. 25, through Friday, May 14, 2027, combining virtual, classroom, and field-based instruction.

Topics include basic botany, soil science, plant identification, pest and disease diagnosis, and growing your own food. Participants also learn to research gardening best practices and answer horticulture questions from the public.

Tuition is $291 and covers all training supplies, field experiences, and a background check. No textbook is required. The program includes online reading, homework, quizzes, lectures, and a final exam.

After completing the course, graduates give back through horticultural community service in Thurston County.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.

Master Recycler Composter training

The Master Recycler Composter program meets in person on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting Friday, Sept. 18. Classes are taught by regional experts and staff from Thurston County Public Works and WSU Extension who specialize in composting, recycling, and waste reduction.

MRC applicants must live, work, or operate a business in Thurston County.

The application deadline is 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17.
