Olympia POW/MIA ceremony set for Friday at Capitol Campus

A public ceremony honoring prisoners of war and service members still missing in action takes place at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the POW/MIA Monument on the Capitol Campus in Olympia.

The Washington Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting the free, annual event to mark National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the Nisqually Valley News reported.

The day is observed across the country with ceremonies at military installations and public memorials.

Department Director David Puente Jr. urged residents to attend.

"When our community comes together in Olympia, we create a space of remembrance, healing and unity," Puente said in a news release.

"I encourage everyone to attend and stand with us as we honor those who endured captivity and those who have yet to return home."

The ceremony is open to the public at no cost.
