Thurston County has declared a hazardous weather event for Tuesday, June 23, activating expanded shelter resources as a Heat Advisory takes effect for people living outdoors in Olympia and Tumwater.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory for the Olympia area through 11:00 p.m. Tuesday. Thurston County Public Health and Social Services responded by formally declaring the event to trigger additional outreach and shelter capacity.
Sergio's Place Service Center, at 3501 Mary Elder Rd NE, has extended its hours Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., one hour past its normal 6:00 p.m. close. The shelter guest entrance is off Martin Way. Pets are welcome. For information, call (360) 706-2287.
Olympia Mutual Aid Partners (OlyMAP) is distributing emergency supplies to individuals and families living outside during the heat event, according to the county press release signed by Dr. Jen Freiheit, director of Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.
Interfaith Works is accepting donations at Sergio's Place during regular hours, Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the donation collection entrance. Items needed include bottled water, sports drinks, popsicles, non-perishable snacks, tarps, hats, summer clothing, and sunscreen. Do not park on Martin Way.
