For $55 covering four Monday evenings, Tumwater residents can learn to swing dance at the Old Town Center starting Monday, Aug. 3.

Tumwater Parks and Recreation is offering a Beginning East Coast Swing Course, a four-week partner dance class taught by local instructor Nadine Harrell.

The course runs every Monday from Aug. 3 through Aug. 24, from 7 to 7:50 p.m., at the Tumwater Old Town Center, 215 N. Second Ave. SW.

The class is open to adults 18 and older. No prior dance experience is required.

What to expect

The course listing on the KGY community calendar describes the class as guiding students through the basics of East Coast Swing with technique tips along the way.

The listing says Harrell aims to make students comfortable enough with what they learn to get out on a dance floor and keep growing their skills.

Harrell, who runs Clockwork Dancer LLC, teaches more than ten partner dances and has led previous beginner courses at the Old Town Center, including salsa and rumba. Her teaching philosophy, as described on her Instagram page, focuses on "the elements of technique that takes dance steps from awkward to awesome."

How to register

Registration is available online through the Tumwater Parks and Recreation portal. Residents can also call the department at 360-754-4160 or email [email protected].

The first session is Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m.
