A new lager sitting on shelves at two South Sound taprooms traces its recipe back to the beer that put Tumwater on the map in 1896.

The 5% ABV canned beer blends Triceratops' award-winning Pennsyltucky Lager with Well 80's Leopold's Original 1896 Lager, a recreation of the first beer Leopold Schmidt brewed at what became the Olympia Brewing Company.

The collaboration came from years of informal experimentation. Rob Horn, owner of Triceratops, told the Washington Beer Blog on July 28 that he and Well 80 brewmaster Paul Pearson would occasionally blend the two lagers "just for fun" at the bar.

"I'm fascinated by local history and the rise of the Olympia Brewery," Well 80 co-owner Chris Knudson said in the same interview. "The original release was in the fall of 1896, only seven years after Washington became a state. To boot, the beer is fantastic!"

The heritage runs deep. Well 80's Leopold's Original 1896 Lager was developed by Pearson using Schmidt's handwritten brewing notes, translated from German, in collaboration with Paul Knight, a former Olympia Brewing Company brewmaster.

In the July 28 Washington Beer Blog feature, Knight called the original recipe "a craft beer of its time."

Schmidt founded the brewery at Tumwater Falls in 1896, drawn by the area's artesian water. The company grew into Tumwater's principal industry, employing more than 100 workers by 1909. SABMiller shuttered the Tumwater plant in 2003.

Well 80 itself sits atop one of those artesian wells and uses the water exclusively in its beers. Pearson has described the well's water as having "its own unique chemical composition" that makes it "perfect, really great brewing water."

Horn started Triceratops in his home garage in 2014 and opened the Tumwater tasting room in June 2017. The brewery has won eight medals at the Washington Beer Awards, including two bronzes for Pennsyltucky Lager, a Vienna-style amber inspired by central Pennsylvania brewing traditions.

The can art features a 19th-century brewery baron riding a three-horned dinosaur.

Leotucky Lager is available now at Well 80's brewpub at 514 Fourth Ave. E in Olympia and at the Triceratops tasting room at 8036 River Drive SE, Suite 203 in Tumwater. The breweries said it will reach select Western Washington retailers in the coming weeks.
