Olympia School District high schoolers have one week left to apply for a seat on the Student Leadership Advisory Council, a body that gives students a direct voice in school decisions.

Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 30, according to an OSD announcement posted Oct. 23. The council's first meeting of the year is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9.

The Student Leadership Advisory Council, known as SLAC, lets members share ideas and concerns directly with the school board. The district said SLAC members help shape policies and build "a stronger, more inclusive district."

The application window is short. It opened Monday, Oct. 19, and closes Oct. 30.

This year's application is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors enrolled in OSD schools.

The district said it is looking for students who bring "unique experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives" across culture, academics, athletics and extracurricular activities.

The district posted separate application links on its website for new and returning SLAC members.

SLAC is one of several ways OSD students can participate in district governance. The district also seats student board representatives, juniors or seniors selected by the Board of Directors to serve in an advisory capacity at board meetings.

Those representatives may cast non-binding advisory votes on motions and serve as liaisons between student leadership at their schools and the board, according to the district's student representatives page.

Current student board representatives include Malachi Cardona from Capital High School, Juniper Hummel-Church from Avanti High School and Emma McDonald from the Olympia Regional Learning Academy, according to the district's organization chart updated in September.

A review period will follow the Oct. 30 application deadline before the first SLAC meeting on Nov. 9.
