Tumwater families heading back to school this fall will see staffing, equipment and supplies funded at levels the district says preserve financial stability, after the Tumwater School District Board approved its 2026-27 budget on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The budget maintains a 6% fund balance, a reserve the district described as helping ensure continued fiscal health. That metric marks a notable position for a district that posted a $4.52 million operating deficit in its 2024 budget, according to The JOLT News.
No total dollar figure for the new budget was released in the district's announcement.
The district confirmed the spending plan covers staff, equipment and supplies across its 14 schools serving roughly 6,350 students.
How the vote came together
The approval followed months of public process. Assistant Superintendent Ben Rarick and Financial Services Director Kira Acker presented the budget at a public hearing during the board's June 11 regular meeting, according to board minutes. The board reviewed the draft at its July 14 meeting and signaled it would take final action in August.
The five-member board, led by President Melissa Beard, voted to adopt the budget. No vote count was included in the district's post-meeting summary.

The approval comes as neighboring Olympia School District faces a tighter fiscal picture. OSD Superintendent Patrick Murphy presented a school consolidation timeline to his board on Aug. 6, outlining plans for public hearings this fall on potential consolidations, The Olympian reported. Murphy warned in June that declining enrollment means the district has not seen its last year of reductions and that state investments have not kept pace with the actual costs of operating schools, according to The JOLT News.
Washington state school districts received no new funding beyond mandated inflationary increases for 2026-27, Murphy said at the time.
